It was a buzzing week in Grade 3, with many new things discussed and learned. Students had an opportunity to express their interests and passions during the personal inquiry session. They have started thinking and brainstorming about their personal/ passion project.
'I have....who has....', a simple game with numbers, was fun for students to identify whole and natural numbers. It also led to a discussion of identifying the place value of numbers.
Students were given the Oxford Reading Tree books in groups to explore the texts and identify whether they were fiction or non-fiction. They were also guided to do the activities assigned in the books for discussion and to write the words that were new to them. Students enjoyed reading with their buddies in the group.
We had our student council election held in the class during the week. Students listened to and watched the story- 'I am a Leader'. After watching, they reflected individually on what makes them a leader. A few students volunteered to nominate themselves for the student council representative. The students then cast their votes using a post-it confidentially.
Students engaged in silent reading. They love to read to themselves at times.
Picture prompts help students to think, inquire and brainstorm. A similar thing was experienced in the class when some of the photographs were displayed, and students came up with their responses.
It is just amazing to witness how thoughtful they are when they respond to these prompts, as they can make meaningful connections.
Ms Latha came to our class this week, which was a great start to our SEL (Social Emotional Learning) sessions. She discussed about being kind through a book called 'Be Kind'. Also, she inquired about what makes us a good and ethical leader, reiterating the role of a student council.
As mindfulness and physical movement are essential aspects of social and emotional well-being. Students were guided to perform yoga postures and some physical activity using the dice.
For the student-led sessions, we had a read-aloud session, a puppet and envelope-making activity, and some simple drawing tricks during the Fun Zone this week.
Students were given some paintings as their prompts to create a story and write the same in their books. They came up with some exciting writing pieces, and its fascinating to see how imaginative they are.
Children are very close to nature, and their creativity and imagination are best observed amidst it. Students created sand castles during their playtime.
Unpacking the central idea- Students were given some scrambled words to create a meaningful statement. They came with the same in groups to scaffold and understand their central idea for the unit.
They also played a game- 'People's Bingo' to identify the different factors of health and well-being.
Math about me- Students were guided to create number riddles or equations to express more about themselves. For example, if they have to reveal their age which is 7 years old, they have to create an equation with any basic operation like 2 + 5 or 10--3 or 7x1 or 56/8. Similarly, they had to think about all the other details about themselves and create equation riddles.
Students were given some number cards in groups to be sorted according to their colour and symbols and placed in ascending order.
Think pair share: Students identified the similarities and differences between themselves and discussed what makes them unique after reading the book- 'Whoever you are' by Mem Fox.
During their Hindi lessons, students collaboratively discussed the learner profile attributes and created posters.
It was a fulfilling and productive week for us all. :)
